HISTORY of the L88 Corvette

cross flags.jpg

The Regular Production Option (RPO) L88 made its debut in the 1967 Corvette. This special option featured the high-performance competition cylinder heads from the L88 racecar, paired with the powerful L71 427 Turbo Jet engine. The lightweight aluminum heads made a noticeable difference, leading many L88-equipped Corvettes to find their way onto the drag strip. Only 20 Corvettes were ordered with the L88 option in 1967, and that number grew to 80 in 1968.

In its final year, 1969, only 116 Corvettes rolled out with the potent L88 engine option. Alongside the mandatory M22 "Rock Crusher" transmission, 17 of these cars came with the M40 CY high shift point automatic transmission.

The L88 Corvette has become a legendary icon in motorsports, celebrated for its impressive racing history and outstanding performance. Introduced in the late 1960s, this high-performance variant was built to dominate the track, boasting a powerful 427 cubic inch V8 engine that delivered over 500 horsepower. With its lightweight build, upgraded suspension, and sleek aerodynamics, the L88 was a true powerhouse on the racing circuit.

The L88 Corvette's track record is nothing short of amazing, with wins in prestigious events like the Daytona 24 Hours, Sebring 12 Hours, and Le Mans 24 Hours. It quickly became a racing legend, known for its unmatched speed, agility, and endurance. The L88 Corvette left an indelible mark on motorsports, earning its place in history as one of the most revered and formidable cars ever to hit both the track and the street.

This registry aims to preserve and document the history of these unique Corvettes, celebrating their legacy and contributions to the world of racing.
